Join Mpumalanga Heritage for a special day marking 300 years since the first recorded European journey through the region — the 1725 expedition led by Frans de Kuiper, which crossed the Komati River near present-day Komatipoort and met resistance from local chiefs.
Set at the confluence of the Crocodile and Komati Rivers, Komatipoort has a rich and layered past. This outing traces that story: from the Swazi and Shangaan communities with deep roots in the region, through de Kuiper's early crossing, the arrival of the railway in the 1890s — the first train crossed the border on 1 July 1891 — and the town's role in the Anglo-Boer War, to its place today as a busy gateway between South Africa, Mozambique and Eswatini.
